UKRAINIAN BOXING GENIUS WHO REWROTE HISTORY
When I look at Oleksandr Usyk’s career, I understand – before me is not just a boxer, but a true artist of the ring. In a world where size often decides everything, this Ukrainian proved: technique beats strength, and mind overcomes brute force. As a professional boxing observer, I can say with confidence – Usyk accomplished what seemed impossible in the modern era.
FROM SIMFEROPOL TO WORLD GREATNESS
Imagine a boy from Crimea who at 15 gave up football for boxing. Sounds like an ordinary story? Not at all. Oleksandr Usyk, born January 17, 1987, became the only boxer in history to win undisputed championships in two weight classes in the four-belt era. It’s like winning two different Olympics in a row – simply fantastic.
His childhood in Simferopol was spent in a modest family, where his father served in the military after the war in Afghanistan. The tragedy that defined the future champion’s character occurred in 2012. When Usyk returned home with Olympic gold from London, his father was already lying in a coffin. Oleksandr placed the medal in his deceased father’s hands – this moment became a symbol of all his future victories.
Family values remained sacred for Usyk. Since 2009, he has been married to Ekaterina, and they have four children. A deeply religious Orthodox Christian, he dedicates every victory to God and Ukraine. When Russia invaded in 2022, Usyk returned home and joined the territorial defense. His house in Vorzel was looted by Russian soldiers, but every ring appearance became a performance for his homeland.
AMATEUR SCHOOL: FOUNDATION OF GREATNESS
Amateur Achievements:
- 🥇 2012 Olympic Gold Medal (London)
- 🏆 2011 World Championship (Baku)
- 🥇 2008 European Championship (Liverpool)
- 📊 335 wins, 15 losses amateur record
In amateur boxing, Usyk collected a collection that any sports museum would envy. A record of 335 wins with 15 losses – these are not just numbers, but an encyclopedia of boxing experience. The 2012 Olympic gold in London, where he defeated Clemente Russo in the final, was just the tip of the iceberg.
What particularly impresses me about his amateur career is his ability to learn from defeats. The same Clemente Russo defeated Usyk in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. But in 2012, the Ukrainian took convincing revenge in the final. This shows his main quality – the ability to analyze, adapt, and improve.
The 2011 World Championship in Baku, European gold in 2008 in Liverpool, participation in the World Series of Boxing – all this laid the technical foundation that allowed him to dominate in the professionals. In amateurs, there’s no place for brute force – speed, accuracy, and tactical thinking rule there. These qualities became Usyk’s trademark.
PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY: FROM DEBUTANT TO LEGEND
Conquering Cruiserweight
On November 9, 2013, Usyk debuted against Mexican Felipe Romero, winning by technical knockout in the fifth round. Signing with K2 Promotions of the Klitschko brothers, he began a series of nine straight early victories. It was already clear then – this guy was special.
His first world title came record-fast. On September 17, 2016, in Gdansk, he defeated unbeaten Krzysztof Glowacki, winning the WBO belt. A world title in his tenth professional fight – this is a divisional record that speaks for itself.
But Usyk demonstrated his true masterpiece in the 2017-2018 World Boxing Super Series tournament. Quarterfinal against Marco Huck – technical knockout in the tenth round. The semifinal with Maris Briedis became the toughest fight in the Ukrainian’s career, but he withstood and unified the WBO and WBC titles.
The final against Murat Gassiev on July 21, 2018, in Moscow was a triumph. A unanimous victory with scores of 120-108, 119-109, 119-109 made Usyk the first undisputed champion in cruiserweight history. All four major belts – WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO – were in his hands, plus the Muhammad Ali Trophy.
Conquering Heavyweight
After complete domination at cruiserweight, Usyk accepted the challenge of the century – moving to heavyweight. On October 12, 2019, he debuted against Chazz Witherspoon, stopping the American after the seventh round. At 215 pounds (97.5 kg), he was significantly lighter than most heavyweights, but this didn’t bother him.
The duology with Anthony Joshua became a turning point. The first fight on September 25, 2021, at Tottenham Stadium in London showed the world a masterclass of technique against strength. Usyk outboxed Olympic champion Joshua, winning by unanimous decision. CompuBox statistics showed the Ukrainian’s technical superiority – 148 accurate punches against 123 with better accuracy.
The rematch on August 20, 2022, in Jeddah proved more competitive. Joshua showed improved tactics, but Usyk won the crucial late rounds, retaining his titles by controversial split decision.
Epic Confrontation with Tyson Fury

On May 18, 2024, in Riyadh, the most anticipated heavyweight fight in a decade took place. Usyk vs Tyson Fury – this was a battle for the right to be called the best. The Ukrainian became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, defeating the “Gypsy King” by split decision. The key moment was Fury’s knockdown in the ninth round.
The rematch on December 21, 2024, ended with an even more convincing victory for Usyk by unanimous decision. The Ukrainian controlled the late rounds and definitively proved his superiority. Two fights with Fury showed the whole world – size doesn’t decide everything when your opponent has technique, intellect, and unbreakable will.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS
🦵 Footwork: Magnificent footwork allows him to “dance” around larger opponents with unmatched mobility.
🛡️ Defense: Elusive defense, honed in hundreds of amateur fights, makes him practically invulnerable.
🧠 Ring IQ: Exceptional boxing intelligence and tactical adaptation during fights.
💪 Conditioning: Superior conditioning allows him to maintain pace for full 12 rounds.
What makes Usyk special? His style is a symphony of movement, where every element works in harmony. The transition from cruiserweight to heavyweight was accompanied by tactical evolution. If previously Usyk often won early, against elite heavyweights he relies on technical superiority over the 12-round distance.
His ability to win on foreign territory is amazing. Poland, Latvia, Russia, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia – everywhere Usyk achieved key victories. This speaks to an iron psyche and ability to concentrate regardless of external factors.
RECORD AND STATISTICS
Usyk’s professional record is flawless: 23 wins, 0 losses, 14 knockouts (60.9%). He has never been knocked out or even sent to a knockdown. This statistic in heavyweight, where every punch can be the last, is simply fantastic.
Current titles include WBC, WBA Super, and WBO belts in heavyweight, plus The Ring Magazine title. He is the only two-time undisputed champion in the four-belt era and the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2000 after Lennox Lewis.
LEGACY AND FUTURE
At age 38, Usyk remains at peak form. The upcoming fight with Daniel Dubois on July 19, 2025, at Wembley could make him a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion – an achievement that has never existed in history.
Oleksandr Usyk rewrote boxing history, becoming the embodiment of technical perfection and unshakeable will. His legacy goes beyond sporting achievements – he became a symbol of Ukrainian resilience in the most difficult times for his country. Usyk proved to the world that size and strength yield to technique, speed, and the limitless determination of a Ukrainian heart.
When years from now they write the history of boxing at the beginning of the 21st century, Oleksandr Usyk’s name will shine especially bright – as an example of how the impossible becomes possible when talent meets indomitable will to win.
